In times of profound change, the learners inherit the earth, while the learned find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists.
– American philosopher, Eric Hoffer
As a person who is heading into my senior years, I find it ever increasingly hard to adapt to a changing world. I know the way things used to work, I liked the way things worked. The world moved at a pace that I could keep up with.
Now I can’t even keep up with the correct terminology so as not to offend people within earshot. I don’t mean anything by it, I am just not glued to the twitisphere 24 hours a day to keep up with it. Actually, I am not even sure Twitter is still a thing. Usually by the time I hear about something and figure out how to use it, it’s already been replaced by something much more useless, time consuming and harder to figure out.
I would like to be a learner but frankly I really don’t want to learn how AI, robots, artificial 3d printed meat, space travel, data mining, blockchain, bitcoin, automation, driverless cars, electric cars, facebook, twitter, instagram, snapchat, tiktok and every other useless app is going to make my life better.
I am old enough to remember a time before the internet and smart phones. I truly long for those days. A world without instant communication and the nonstop onslaught of the gossipnet was a quieter more sane and easier to understand world. I guess I am going to get left behind and that’s just fine with me.
